South Sulawesi

South Sulawesi covers an area of 46,717 km2 with population over 9 Million inhabitant. There are four main tribes on this area: The Bugis, Makassar, Mandar & The Toraja. The first three tribes mostly lives in the lowland area of South Sulawesi. They are also sharing Muslim Religion. The Torajan tribe, live in the high rugged mountain of Sulawesi, is the most unique tribe in Indonesia. They still believe in ancestor spirit and practice elaborate funeral ceremony for the love one. Makassar, formerly known as Ujung Pandang, is the Capital of South Sulawesi Province and the main city and gateway for eastern Indonesia.



 

Makassar

Makassar is the capital of South Sulawesi province. This city is well known as the center of spice trade since the 16th to 17th centuries ago. Today Makassar is the gate for east Indonesia and its rich cultures & fresh seafood culinary attract domestic as well as foreign tourists to come to this amazing city. Toraja

Toraja lies about 328 km north of Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi province. They are famous as a tribe that still maintain the old tradition. Here you can still witness the elaborate funeral ceremony that has been held since dated back to the ancestor time. You will also amaze with a lot of unique graves, terraced rice field, strange shape of house architecture and many more. In short, Toraja is the right destination for people who love culture and adventure.

 

Sengkang

Sengkang lies in the heart of the Bugis Land. The Bugis, beside well known as sea farer, also known as one of the tribe that made beautiful pattern of silk sarongs. In Sengkang, you can visit a village where entire of women population of the village weaving silk sarong. You can also visit the fishermen floating village in the middle of lake Tempe and have tea with them while enjoy the glory sunset.

 

Bira

Bira beach is famous for its fine white sandy beach, and unique dive sensation since it is where Makassar strait sea meet with Flores sea. There are several other places where you can enjoy great swimming, or just simply enjoy the surrounding nature, such as Bara Beach, Apparalang beach, Liukang Island and many other beaches. Bira beach is also famous for its traditional wooden boat construction, people from all over Indonesia event from Europe come to Bira to order traditional sailing vessel that still ply the sea of Indonesia now days.
